I’m always looking for interesting places to stretch my fins on the grid, and I want you to come along too!

Hobbit's Preserve

I forgot who passed this LM along to me a while back, I think it was ColeMarie, but there’s a nice underwater area in the Hobbit Nature Preserve (I did not see any hobbits, however). You can’t really tell from the surface, it’s a psychedelic mermaid playground underneath.

I’m always delighted to find SO MUCH mermaid media on the web. These entries are some the best of what I find, and reflect what my vision of merfolk are and should be.

Michelle84’s Moonrise in Spring deptics a dazzling mermaid in repose on a rock, beautiful fins blossoming from her back, scales flowering across her landscape. The artist commented that she was inspired by daffodils, her favorite flower.

I know this SIM has been around for a little while, today was my first visit. There’s actually a mermaid-specific underwater area that’s stunning (which I ran across on flickr here). There are a few tacky full-bright novelty cutouts here and there that spoil the atmosphere a bit, but the good far outweighs the bad. This is one of the best aquatic spots I’ve been to in a long time. Come look!

I took a few months off from Second Life. I’m back, sort of, but really only logging in once a week a most.

I’ve been really, really glad to see lots of development in the merfolk community. Lots of things I’m curious about investiating more, but haven’t had the time to.

One thing I’ve noticed is that there are flexi tails now popping up in various shops. Erluen Twin’s Merwings has some (I’m always impressed with the technical quality of her products. Not so much the textures, but her tails are some of the best built I’ve ever worn). I’m curous how flexi’s work. I’m guessing that invisiprims are used to hide the legs? And how does that work with an AO? Wouldn’t the tail flop all over the place?

My Japanese friend Kyotta Spittler has also opened the doors to a brand new Mermaid Temple. It’s been under construction for a while, and I’m pleased to see that going!

Anyway, I hope to be back and updating this blog even if it’s on a semi-regular basis. Please send me LM’s of any intersting places to swim and photograph.

Del pensamiento al papel

A stunning rendering of a siren caught in a difficult situation, out of water and at the mercy of men by Santiago @ DeviantArt. Santiago’s rendering of the mermaid is bare, natural, and emotional. Inventing a narrative to go with the image is just as wonderful as looking at it. I’ll be hanging this in my home for sure.

Do you want to swim inside a dream? If so, make haste to this beautiful place. Turn on the stream, set world to midnight, and one has a fantastic place for meditation and reflection. Though not a merfolk-exclusive venue, sea-dwellers and their kin will find themselves well at home here.

Apologies, all. I’ve been away from SL for a bit, or at least not spending as much time in world as I usually do. I do hope to be back soon with new things to share.

An incredible rendering by janasnaschi @ DeviantArt. The detail in the coloring is fantastic, and I adore her pose, shape, and scales (especially her breast coverings). Look at the hints or orange, green, and purple on those scales! I swoon.

Floating

I’m sure you’re all familiar with The Mermaid Problem, and for all its liberties of imagination, Second Life does present us sea-folk with a few “mermaid problems” of our own (one of which being The Problem proper, but we’ll discuss that another time). Any new mermaid will quickly observe that not many of SL’s waterways are merfolk friendly, and sometimes you want to swim near the surface of the water rather than comb the bottom of a sim. Obviously, the only way to do this is by flying (Dear Linden Lab: Why can’t there be an option for swimming? You’ve got animation states for it—animation states which I’ve never seen, because we can’t swim, mind you). But flying is exactly what one does, right out of the water on any extended stretch of swimming. Thus, the process of swimming is constant tedium; move, adjust depth (altitude), repeat.

To solve this SLMP™ (Second Life Mermaid Problem™), one needs to employ the use of a Swim Assist. The idea of the swim assist is simple: keep the mermaid in the water. The implementation itself is a bit trickier, though. In this article I’ll explain a few of the commercial solutions out there, and let you make the choice of which is best for you.
